How to Replace an Audi G28 Engine Speed Sensor

1. Engine Speed Sensor

It is located on the outside of the transmission, above the flywheel ring gear, the G28 Engine Speed Sensor sends an electrical signal to ECU pin T55/49 through an uncolored wire. The ECU then uses this information to control fuel, timig and boost. It also sends signals to the G5 tachometer inside the instrument cluster.

The sensor is used to correlate the G40 Camshaft position Sensor. The ecu must be aware when the crankshaft is TDC and where the camshaft is so it can start spark and injectors according to the situation.

If this sensor fails, the ECU will throw a P00160 code which means the Crank Shaft and Intake Camshaft aren't in sync, possibly indicating the chain stretching or a jump link on the upper timing chain. However, the error code won't appear on its own, without additional information from other sensors (G4 and G40).

Testing is a bit tricky since there are two connector pins and they have different functions however the best way to test it is to measure resistance between the sensor and the ECU. When the sensor is fully operational, it should be reading around 1000 ohms. If you are having problems with this sensor, look for evidence of oil or coolant in the connector bay.

2. Injectors

Yesterday, while accelerating at full speed from the highway paytoll i had massive power loss like the engine is running out of gas or injectors aren't firing any more. This morning i pull out the spark plugs, 3 were drenched in gazoline, the fourth was dry. I put a piece of tissue over each injector hole and when i turn the engine on without sparks, the three with gazoline jump out. The fourth one remains shut. I tested the ground connection on ECU pins 14/55/30/55/48/55/14/55/48/ I got zero Ohm. I assume that the problem is somewhere else.

I also tried to reset the PID but with no luck. The car is able to start if the G28 is unplugged and runs fine when it is connected but it still has the intermittent misfire issue at higher RPM. The coolant sensor (G62) even when unplugged, still shows an ice temperature of -49c. I also noticed that the website oil pressure gauge in the cockpit shows 2 bar while the actual pressure is 0.0 if i crank up the engine.

3. Fuel Pump
